The one thing you MUST do before giving feedback

It’s totally natural to get annoyed, or frustrated, or irritated at something someone on your team does. However, these emotions aren’t great motivators for the people on your team.

Before giving any feedback, be sure to check your intent.

Are you giving them this feedback because you feel personally offended and you want them to suffer too? Or are you giving this feedback because you genuinely have their best interest at heart, and you can see that this feedback will help them achieve their aspirations?

Can you see how different the feedback would be delivered and received in those examples?

If you feel your emotions boiling inside you, it isn’t a good time to give feedback. Stop and take a walk around the block. Make sure you are composed and not emotional when giving feedback.

So long as you are giving feedback with your direct report’s best interest in mind, they will be happy to receive it.Be sure to check your intent first before you ever give feedback.
